How to Choose the Best Coffee Ever (for your Health!)

How to Choose the Best Coffee Ever (for your Health!)

You have heard the controversy about whether or not coffee is good for you. It seems to offer amazing health benefits, yet it can also be hard for some peoples’ systems to handle, especially if they consume too much of it.

shutterstock_133834184Whether or not you drink your coffee black—it’s not a black and white issue. Like many things, even the coffee controversy contains many shades of grey.

Coffee is a lot like chocolate. There’s a world of difference between a candy bar that is made from genetically modified ingredients; vegetable oil, processed sugar, and soy versus an organic stone-ground raw chocolate product sweetened with whole foods and with nothing artificial added.

Why Does Coffee Have a Bad Rap?

When manufacturers start to mass produce consumable products, they pay very close attention to the bottom line and do everything in their power to cut costs. Coffee, being the second most commonly traded commodity in the world (after petroleum), fits squarely in this category.

shutterstock_308807420Cutting costs in the coffee industry looks like anything from using unfair labor and poor farming practices to inferior drying, re-wetting, large batch roasting, and bad storage practices in the post-production handling of coffee. This commonly leads to mold growth and usually results in contamination with ochratoxin-A in the final product.

Interestingly, many of the negative side-effects of coffee which are generally attributed to caffeine are actually the result of the ochratoxins in the coffee: things like racing heartbeat and jitteriness, and they also make the flavor more bitter.

Ochratoxin-A is reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen based on sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity from various studies:

The presence of ochratoxins in coffee can be significantly impacted by the procedures which are utilized during processing. While molds can be killed off during the roasting process, ochratoxins usually survive. In fact, ochratoxins have been known to survive autoclaving for 3 hours.  (IARC 1976).

Quality over Quantity

Before considering any of the procedures used in processing coffee, it’s important to know that coffee is one of the most highly chemically-treated crops in the world.

shutterstock_305906147The pesticides and fertilizers that are used during the farming process slowly destroy the soil’s fertility and seep into the earth and the water supplies. Buying certified organic coffee is a must! This means that the beans have been tested for chemical residue and have passed the test.

Sustainable farming practices are important. Coffee produced in natural conditions, at high altitudes, in mineral-rich soil, produces some of the best tasting beans in the world. Coffee has a very high level of antioxidants and the quality of the soil has a lot to do with this. Fair trade means that the farmers enjoy better living conditions and wages.

The care taken from harvest through manufacture has a significant impact.

shutterstock_158609069Coffee processed in small batches has less chance of being contaminated in ways that mass production can’t help but achieve. Also, using special equipment to roast the beans with air means that ochratoxins aren’t produced and the resulting product is uncontaminated—a rarity in today’s marketplace.

A good quality coffee bean contains multiple nutrients, including polyphenols and flavonoid antioxidants. You can detect the quality of a coffee bean by taste and smell. A good coffee should have a good aroma as well as a pleasant taste. If it tastes stale or rancid, you will know right away not to drink it.

If you are NOT buying whole bean coffee now, there is a good chance that the coffee you are drinking is rancid.

Most commercially available ground coffee falls into this category. Coffee packed from ground beans cannot even survive a week without becoming stale. The rate of rancidity increases once you grind the beans, and so the contents of a new package have already degraded before you even purchased it.

Unless you buy whole, organic beans, you’ll miss out on the nutrition that could be available to you in coffee.

shutterstock_108320753Naturally occurring caffeine, such as is found in raw cacao**, tea, and coffee, comes with an array of healthful co-factors normally found in a nutritionally dense whole food.

When you separate the caffeine from the co-factors, which happens when you create decaffeinated coffee, you ingest a nutritionally deficient food that is no longer considered a “whole food”. Decaffeinated coffee and tea have very little nutritional value because of this.

Quality coffee is loaded with nutrients such as B-vitamins, Potassium, Manganese, and is the biggest source of antioxidants in the modern diet.*

For health purposes, avoid adding sugar to your coffee. Adding sugar to coffee may reduce the benefits you will receive because sugar can spike insulin levels and may lead to insulin resistance. For best results, drink your coffee black, without sugar.

What Coffee Meets all of the Above Standards?

You have come to trust the Longevity Warehouse® for bringing you the best superfoods and superherbs on the planet… Now we bring you the best, organic, no acid, antioxidant-rich superfood coffee beans ever!

LONGEVITY-COFFEE-PACK-DARKGrown, roasted, and packed in same country, Longevity Coffee® is brewed daily in very small batches to fulfill all the best practices described above.

Longevity Coffee® is grown in very rich volcanic soil (the most mineral dense) and on fields which receive lots of good rain, and are irrigated when necessary with natural spring water. Once harvested, every bean is hand-selected, with about 45% of the beans ultimately becoming rejected for not achieving the high standards that are set for Longevity Coffee®.

Because only small batches are produced, the beans are not allowed to sit out and ferment too long or become moldy. Nothing else is processed in the building where this coffee is processed and it does not come into contact with any wood or gas during roasting; it therefore avoids ochratoxin contamination.

All this care from field-to-table ensures that the coffee you receive is nothing but the best. You will notice the difference immediately when you drink this coffee. The taste is amazing – without any bitterness – and you will feel great, without any jitteriness.*
